About myki

Read all about myki in Melbourne's complete guide to myki.

What is myki?

A myki is a durable plastic card – similar in size to a credit card – which you will be able to use to pay for travel on public transport. myki can store value and lasts for many years. Just keep your myki topped up, carry it with you in your wallet or purse and you’ll always be ready to go. You will never have to stop to buy tickets or carry loose change for the ticket machine again.

Why are we introducing myki?

myki uses smart card technology. myki is replacing the current paper and magnetic stripe systems and allows you to enjoy a ticketing system that is integrated across trains, trams and buses.

Learning from similar public transport ticketing systems around the world, myki has been designed for our state’s unique needs. And when myki is fully rolled out, it will be one of the world's largest smart card ticketing systems.

myki card reader How does it work?
You can top up your myki with two types of value – travel days (a myki pass) and a dollar amount (myki money). You can choose to top up with either or both, depending on how you use public transport.

All you have to do is keep your myki topped up and touch on and touch off each time you travel. It’s that easy.

How much does myki cost?
There are four types of myki: full fare, concession, seniors and child.

A full fare myki costs $10 and a concession, seniors or child myki costs $7.

The fares aren’t changing, so you won’t pay more to travel with a myki if you touch on and touch off.

In fact, you will probably end up saving money because myki money is cheaper than the current 2 hour and daily individual Metcards. For example, a Daily Zone 1 Full Fare Metcard costs $6.80, but with myki money you only pay $5.88. That’s a saving of 92 cents each day.

You’ll hear a lot about ‘myki money best fare’ in the coming months. Each time you touch on and touch off, myki recognises the day, time and zone you're in. If you’ve topped up with myki money, myki automatically calculates the best fare for that day – 2 hour or daily for example – and deducts that from your myki balance. So you’ll only ever pay for what you use.
