myki - it's your key

What does a myki cost?

A full fare myki has an initial card fee of $10.

A Concession, Seniors or Child myki has an initial card fee of $7.

Why does myki have a card fee?

There is small cost associated with buying a myki, as it is a durable, plastic smartcard that will last you for four years. This is similar to other smart card ticketing systems operating around the world.

As myki offers discounted travel, within just a few weeks of using myki, customers will recoup the cost of the card when compared to buying short term tickets.

The myki card fee of $10 for a full fare and $7 for a concession, is designed to cover a number of ongoing card costs that would have otherwise been borne by the State and taxpayers. These costs include an embedded value that will allow passengers to touch on with their card and complete their trip, even if this takes their card into debit, as well as card manufacturing and replacement costs.

This means that once a customer has their myki, the card will be guaranteed to operate for four years. If the card stops working during that time and the customer hasn't done anything to damage it, their myki will be replaced free of charge.
