myki pass or myki money?

myki will suit you, whether you are a daily or an occasional traveller.

Your myki can hold a myki pass (travel days) or myki money (a dollar amount) and if you want you can have both stored on your myki at the same time. If you have both, your myki pass will be used first and your myki money will only be debited if you travel outside your myki pass zone(s).

Choosing what is right for you depends on what kind of traveller you are.

myki pass is best for you if:

  • you travel often or commute
  • you normally travel in the same zone(s)
  • you’re after the best value available for regular travel.

myki money is best for you if:

  • your travel patterns vary and you want flexibility
  • you like to pay as you go but still want good value.

myki money
With myki money you will always pay the best fare and it's capped to a 2 hour or Daily rate. myki money is based on Value Metcard fares, so you will save no matter how little or often you travel.

myki money or short term tickets
myki money will provide greater savings than a short term ticket. For example: a 2 hour Zone 1 full fare using myki money is $2.94, while a 2 hour Zone 1 full fare short term ticket is $3.70 (the same price as a 2 hour Zone 1 Metcard). That’s a saving of 76 cents by travelling with myki money.

Note: You can use myki money for travel outside of your myki pass zone(s) — as long as you have a positive myki money balance.
