Default fares
If you do not touch off at the end of your journey, the system may not be able to calculate the correct myki money fare for your trip and will charge a default fare.
A default fare on metropolitan trains is based on the assumption that you travelled in Zones 1 and 2. On the metropolitan tram and bus networks, a default fare will be calculated on the assumption that you travelled to the end of the service (Zone 1 and/or 2).
The same fare rule (end of service) applies on regional bus services where myki is in operation.
- It is an offence not to touch on before you start your journey using myki money. Fines apply.
- If you fail to touch off, the system does not know where you travelled to and charges a default fare.

While myki is being rollout across Melbourne's public transport network, the above default fare structure may vary on certain tram and bus services/routes due to equipment installations.
During this transitional phase, a different default fare structure will be applicable on the three tram and 95 bus routes that cross both Zones 1 and 2.
On these services, a default fare equivalent to the myki money two-hour fare for the zone you touched on in (e.g. touch on in Zone 1 – $2.94, touch on in Zone 2 – $2.02) will be charged.
If charged a default fare this will contribute to your Daily Cap. A full fare customer who fails to repeatedly touch off and travels across zone 1&2 will never pay more than $9.92 on a weekday or $3.00 on a weekend or a public holiday.
