Using myki pass?
If you load a myki pass to your myki, you will need to touch on to activate it. This means the pass is not valid for travel until you touch on for the first time.
You should be aware that when you first touch on to activate your myki pass, the reader will not display your pass expiry details – however it does show this information when you touch off.
If you want to know the expiry of your myki pass, you can check this at the blue myki check machines, at a myki machine or at the myki reader every time you touch on and touch off.
You also need a positive myki money balance ($0.00 or more) for your myki pass to work. Having a few dollars of myki money as well as a myki pass is a good idea, because myki money will be used to pay for travel outside of the zones/s of your myki pass. More information on myki pass.
Online top ups not appearing on your online account?
If you top up your myki online the top up amount will not immediately appear on your transaction history.
You need to touch on at a myki reader or use a myki machine for your top up to be added to your card. It would not be accurate to list the transaction on your card transaction history until the money is added to the card itself. This occurs when you give the system the opportunity to add the credit to your card by touching on at a myki reader or using a myki machine. This is no different to other smartcard systems throughout the world.
You can check the status of your top up in the "my requests" section of the website. It will show the amount that you have topped up and the message "available at next touch on".
Touching on Correctly
Gates at metropolitan train stations have been modified so they accept both Metcard and myki customers. This is a temporary solution and as Metcard is phased out myki gates will replace the current gates.
Some customers are experiencing difficulty touching on and touching off at gates.
To ensure you get through gates as quickly as possible, touch your myki to the centre of the reader – don’t swipe or wave it past the sensor (read more about correct touching action). If the gate does not open, try touching off at another gate.
Unlike other myki readers, the current gates do not display your touch on/touch off status, card balance, or fare information. So, to ensure that you have every chance of successfully exiting a gate make sure you touch on at the start of your journey.
If you have not successfully touched on, you will not be able to exit the gates at the end of your journey. If you’re unsure, you can use a blue myki check machine or myki (top up) machine to view whether your card status is touched on or touched off.
You will not be able to touch on if your myki has a negative balance. You can use a blue myki check machine or myki top up machine to find out the current balance of your myki. If your myki has a negative balance you will need to top up to a positive balance before travelling.
If you’re still having problems touching on or touching off, speak to a Station Officer or Customer Service Representative who may have access to a handheld device. They will be able to check whether your myki is touched on, touched off or has sufficient balance. If you are still having difficulty touching on and touching off, please contact the myki call centre on 13 6954.
Why are some of my recent trips missing from my transaction history?
By registering your myki, you can view your transactions online and order a transaction history statement to be sent to your email address.
It may take several days for transactions to appear on your online transaction summary. This timeframe will be reduced over coming months as myki is introduced across the entire network.
Blue myki check machines located at over 50 train stations can provide you with immediate access to your most recent 10 touch on and touch offs as well as your most recent top-ups.
