Using myki is easy. There are a number of places to top up your myki, then simply touch on and touch off at a myki reader as you travel. Remember your three T’s:
Top up – your myki is ready to go
Touch on – you have a valid ticket
Touch off – to pay the lowest fare.
Minimum requirements for travel
Before you travel, you need to top up your myki with either myki money or myki pass.
- When using myki money, you should have enough value on your myki to pay for your whole journey.
- To use a myki pass you must have a positive myki money balance. If your myki money balance is negative you will not be able to touch on, even with a valid pass.
If your myki money balance is negative, even if you have a valid myki pass, you will not be able to touch on and will not have a valid ticket for your trip. This includes changing mode or vehicle during your journey.
For example, a full fare passenger has $1.80 myki money. They take a train trip in Zone 1 and the system deducts $3.50 from their myki money balance. They will not be able to touch on shortly afterwards when boarding a bus, because they have a negative balance (-$1.70). The passenger must top up to a positive balance before they can touch on again to continue their journey.
