myki equipment

You will see four pieces of myki equipment as you travel.

myki machine

myki machine

myki machines are located at all Metro train stations and some accessible tram stops and bus interchanges. Use a myki machine to top up with cash or EFTPOS/credit card, check your myki card balance and review your 10 most recent transactions.

At a myki machine you can:

  • top up with myki money (minimum $1.00) – value is immediately available for use
  • top up with myki pass (seven days or 28-365 days) – value is immediately available for use
  • view your myki card status – touched on or touched off
  • check the expiry time of your myki money product (2-hour fare)
  • view your remaining myki money balance
  • view your myki pass details and expiry date
  • see your last 10 transactions using ‘myki history'
  • purchase a full fare myki* – selected stations only, use the online locator tool for detailed information.

*requires a minimum top up of $1.00 myki money at the time of purchase.

Use the online myki machine simulator.

Important tips:

  • Leave your myki card in the ‘cradle’ for the entire transaction to ensure your top up is successful. Wait for the message ‘transaction complete’ before removing your myki card.
  • No change is given when topping up myki money.
  • When paying cash for a myki pass, a maximum of $10.00 change is given.
  • An EFTPOS receipt will always be printed when topping up at a myki machine. An additional sales receipt is optional and is printed on request.
  • For greater contrast, touch the zoom button to change the screen to black and white

myki reader

myki reader

myki readers are located at all train stations where myki is valid, on board metropolitan trams and buses and on board regional town buses. Use a myki reader to touch on and touch off as you travel.

At a myki reader you can:

  • touch on to ensure you have a valid ticket
  • touch off to pay the lowest fare for your trip
  • view your remaining myki money balance
  • view your myki pass details and expiry date.

Important tips:

  • Touch your myki to the centre of the reader until you hear a beep and see a green light to indicate a successful touch on or touch off.
  • Do not swipe or wave your myki as this may prevent a successful touch on or touch off.
  • Read the on-screen message for additional information.
  • The on-screen message remains in place for as long as you hold your myki to the reader.

myki gate

myki gates

myki gates replace Metcard gates at city loop train stations and other gated train stations on the network. myki gates are fitted with myki readers, which should be used in the same way as those found elsewhere on the train network and on board trams and buses.

During the period when myki and Metcard operate in parallel, Metcard gates have been adapted to allow myki users to touch on and touch off. On these gates, the myki reader panel is located on the inside of the gate.

Use a myki gate to touch on and touch off as you travel.

At a myki gate you can:

  • touch on to ensure you have a valid ticket
  • touch off to pay the lowest fare for your trip
  • view your remaining myki money balance
  • view your myki pass details and expiry date.

Important tips:

  • Touch your myki to the centre of the reader until you hear a beep and see a green light to indicate a successful touch on or touch off.
  • Do not swipe or wave your myki as this may prevent a successful touch on or touch off.
  • Read the on-screen message for additional information.
  • The on-screen message remains in place for as long as you hold your myki to the reader.
