Tram zone changes

  • What do these changes mean?
  • Will I have to pay more?
  • Does anyone pay less when these changes are made?
  • What will I be charged using myki on a tram?
  • When will the CitySaver fare be phased out?

    What do these changes mean?
Every myki user needs to touch on as they enter a tram. Recent changes to tram zones means trams operate across Zone 1 with small sections of Routes 86, 42, 109, 75 at the end of the line operating in a Zone 1&2 overlap.

If you don’t touch off on a tram you will be charged a Zone 1 default fare (Zone 1, two hour, full fare myki money $2.94); passengers who travel exclusively in the overlap zone should touch on and touch off on every trip to access the cheaper Zone 2 fare (Zone 2, two hour, full fare myki money $2.02).

Will I have to pay more? For those people who currently buy a single use CitySaver, the difference in the fare for them will be 14 cents. However, many CitySaver customers will pay less with myki, for example by accessing the equivalent of a 2hr Zone 1 fare for a return trip, rather than purchasing two CitySaver fares.

Does anyone pay less when these changes are made?
Many myki customers will pay almost half price for their trips under the revised zones.

  • Full fare tram customers who currently pay $10.60 for a Daily Zone 1+2 Metcard will pay only $5.88 under myki, saving them $4.72
  • Concession tram customers who currently pay $5.60 for a Daily Zone 1+2 Metcard will pay only $2.94 under myki saving them $2.66
  • Full fare tram customers who currently pay $5.80 for a 2hr Zone 1+2 Metcard will pay only $2.94 under myki saving them $2.86
  • Concession tram customers who currently pay $3.30 for a 2hr Zone 1+2 Metcard will pay only $1.47 under myki saving them $1.83

These savings are significant and are expected to make using Melbourne’s public transport cheaper for many commuters.

What will I be charged using myki on a tram?*

  • Touch on in Zone 1, travel and do not touch off: Zone 1, two-hour fare. $2.94
  • Touch on in Zone 1, travel and touch off in Zone 1/2 overlap. Zone 1, two-hour fare. $2.94
  • Touch on in Zone 1/2 overlap, travel and do not touch off: Zone 1, two-hour fare. $2.94
  • Touch on in Zone 1/2 overlap, travel a few stops and touch off in Zone 1/2 overlap. Zone 2, two-hour fare. $2.02

When will the CitySaver fare be phased out?
CitySaver fares are still available with Metcard and can be used on all modes until the system is phased out.

It is important to note CitySaver fares are valid for ONE TRIP only and in many cases it is more expensive to use CitySaver when taking multiple trips throughout the day.

    Example:
Take a trip from your CBD office to a city meeting using 10 x CitySaver Metcard = $2.18. Return to your office = $2.18 or a total of $4.36.

Using a myki you save $1.42. Touch on at 9.15 am and travel to your meeting. You are charged a Zone 1, two-hour fare of $2.94 and have until 11.59 am (two hours forty five minutes) to complete your return travel to your office without being charged another fare.

So, although the CitySaver fare is being phased out, many commuters will actually save money by using myki and letting it calculate the best fare for their trip.
