Using myki – myki money, myki pass, touch on, touch off, default fares

Do I still need to touch off, if I’m travelling with a myki pass?
You need to touch on to activate your myki pass and you should touch on and off every time you travel.

What happens if I forget to touch off? (default fares)
Touching off tells myki where you got off and enables the lowest fare to be calculated for your journey. With myki money, if you don’t touch off, your myki doesn’t know where you got off and will charge a default fare.

A default fare is a fare applied if your myki card is not touched off. Default fares vary depending on the mode of transport you are travelling on and where you are travelling to.

Trains
If you do not touch off on metropolitan trains the default fare assumes that you have travelled in Zones 1+2.

Trams
Recent changes to tram zones mean that all trams now operate across Zone 1, with small sections of Routes 86, 42, 109 and 75 at the end of the line, operating in a Zone 1+2
overlap. If you do not touch off on metropolitan trams the default fare assumes that you have travelled in Zone 1. Passengers who travel only in Zone 2 will need to touch off
to access the cheaper Zone 2 fare.

Buses
If you do not touch off on metropolitan buses the default fare assumes you have travelled to the end of the service – Zone 1 and/or 2. The same default fare rule applies when travelling
on regional bus services where myki is currently in operation.

Default fares
Mode of transport Zone Default fare
Train Zone 1+2 Two hour Zone 1+2 fare - $4.96
Tram Zone 1 Two hour Zone 1 fare – $2.94
Bus Zone 1, Zone 2 or Zones 1+2 Up to $4.96*

* Bus routes operating entirely within a single zone have a default fare of $2.94 (Zone 1) or $2.02 (Zone 2).

Concession default fares are 50% of full fares shown. As myki is progressively implemented across Victoria there may be minor variations to default fares charged on specific services and routes. More information on default fares...

What if the myki reader is damaged or not working and I can’t touch on or touch off?
If a myki reader is damaged, then you should touch off at another nearby reader.

While it’s highly unlikely – if all of the myki readers nearby aren’t working, you can ring the call centre on 13 6954 (13 myki). We will be able to check the status of all myki readers at the station and process a refund on the default fare, if necessary.

I think I touched on twice – what happens?
It is not possible to touch on twice. You can touch on and off at the same device, however, a blocking period prevents you from touching on and then touching off too quickly or accidentally.

If you change your mind and don’t want to catch the train you are about to take, you can touch off within 15 mins and you won’t be charged a fare. (Because customers touch on a tram and bus as they board their service, there is no change of mind permitted on trams or buses.)

If you have a registered myki, you can check your transaction history online or can call the myki call centre on 13 6954 (13 myki).

I use myki money but when I tried to touch on and touch off for the City Early Bird I couldn’t?
When using a myki to travel you need to have a myki money balance of $0.01 to touch on – this includes for the free Early Bird travel.

If you can’t touch on or touch off successfully to get your Early Bird travel it may because your balance has fallen below one cent. You need to top up your myki before you can travel.

I have a valid myki pass but I can’t touch on – why is this happening?
If you have a valid myki pass but can’t touch on this may be because your myki money balance has a negative balance.

A myki pass will enable you to travel within the zone(s) covered by the pass as long as your myki money balance is $0.00 or more.

But even with a myki pass you will be unable to touch on if you have a negative (i.e. less than $0.00) balance on the card, regardless of what zone you are touching on in. You will need to top up your myki money in order to travel.

If you are travelling outside of the zone covered by your myki pass, you will need to ensure you have myki money on your card so you can travel in additional zones.

I have a Seniors myki but I can’t touch on to get the free travel on Sunday – why?
All Seniors mykis have the free Sunday Pass loaded onto them.

When using a myki to travel you need to have a myki money balance of $0.01 to touch on – this includes for free Sunday travel.

If you have a Seniors card and can’t touch on successfully on a Sunday it may because your balance has fallen below one cent. You need to top up your myki before you can travel.

If you have a positive balance of $0.01 or more and still can’t touch on successfully on a Sunday you should ring the call centre on 13 6954 (13 myki).

What happens if I am at the train station, change my mind and decide I’ll get a taxi/drive but I’ve already touched on at the platform?
At train stations there is a 15 minute ‘change of mind’ period. This will allow you, when using a myki, to change your mind and exit the station paid area without paying a fare if you have not actually used a service. Simply touch your myki to the reader within 15 minutes of the initial touch on and your transaction will be cancelled.

What happens if I forget to touch off using myki pass - will I be charged a default fare?
You should always touch on and touch off every time you travel with a myki pass (this ensures you do not inadvertently travel beyond the expiry date of your pass).

myki pass customers will not be charged a default fare when using their pass within the zone(s) in which it is valid.

If you are travelling outside of the zone covered by your myki pass, you will need to ensure you have myki money on your card so you can travel in additional zones. If you touch on in a zone for which your pass is not valid and then fail to touch off, you will be charged a default fare in the usual way.

How does a student pass work?
Discounted student passes are available for certain zones – e.g., to cover services in Ballarat, or for services across Victoria. Yearly and first half-yearly student passes start on 1 January. Second half-yearly passes start on 1 July. First half-yearly passes expire 31 July. Yearly and second half-yearly passes expire on the last day of February the following year.

Student passes are available from the MetShop or staffed railway stations. A student pass is valid for unlimited travel within the zone(s) of validity until the expiry of the pass on metropolitan train, tram and bus services, all regional town bus services and all V/Line train and coach services. The pass is valid for economy class travel only on V/Line train and coach services.

Student passes are loaded onto a concession myki and are only valid when used in conjunction with the Victorian Public Transport Concession Card with which they are purchased.

When travelling on a service with myki ticketing equipment, the customer should touch on and touch off the student pass in the usual way. When travelling on other services, both the student pass and the associated concession card must be carried and shown on demand to an authorised person.

What happens if I have a yearly Metcard or I’m with the Commuter Club?
For a time, the myki and Metcard ticketing systems will operate in parallel, meaning that customers can use a myki or Metcard to travel on public transport. For this reason, we encourage Metcard Commuter Club customers to continue to buy their tickets as normal until otherwise advised.

When myki begins operating in Melbourne, the Metcard Commuter Club program will start operating as the myki Commuter Club. Although there will be some small changes to how the accounts operate, the processes in managing the accounts will be largely the same as they are today. We will provide you with more information when we get closer to the introduction of myki.

Customers with a yearly Metcard will receive a letter explaining how they can swap their Metcard for a myki with a myki pass at no charge.

How will a ticket inspector know if my myki is valid for travel?
Authorised Officers will use hand held devices to check that a myki is valid for travel.

Will there be a period of grace for people without valid myki cards?

To travel on public transport you must have a valid ticket. If you don’t have a valid myki, you must have a short term ticket (or a Metcard or a V/Line ticket while that system still operates).

Can I use my myki pass for travel on weekends?

Yes, your myki pass is valid for unlimited travel in the zone(s) covered until the expiry date of the pass. This includes travel during the week and at weekends, just like Metcard today.

Because myki will be part of an integrated ticketing system covering services across Victoria, the current Metcard rule allowing periodical ticket holders to travel in the neighbouring metropolitan zone for no extra cost will not be continued under the new system.

However, customers using myki money to travel will never pay more than $3.00 per day on a Saturday or Sunday (or a public holiday) for unlimited travel within zones 1 and 2. If you have a myki pass for Zone 1 or 2, the appropriate 2 hour fare for this zone will count towards the $3.00 maximum fare. So if you have a myki pass for one metropolitan zone and you travel in the other zone on a weekend, the amount deducted from your myki money could be as little as 6 cents, or at most $1.47, for travel in zones 1 and 2 for the whole day.

How can I travel in regional Victoria?

You can travel on myki from the following Zone 2 stations: Ardeer, Deer Park, Diggers Rest, Melton, Rockbank and Sunbury.

Currently, you need to buy a V/Line ticket to travel beyond Zone 2.

Can I register a myki in a business name for employees?
A company (or person) is able to register up to eight myki cards under an account name. However, under the Transport Act 1983 and Regulations, a public transport ticket is not transferable, and may only be used for travel by the person who first uses it. A company may act as an account holder for an employee's myki, but may not transfer a myki between employees.

If I touch on after 6.00pm using myki money, will my ticket be valid until 3.00am the next day?
Yes. If you are using myki money and you touch on after 6.00 pm, you will be charged a 2 hour fare that is valid until 3.00 am the next day.
