Minimum requirements
Travel in one or two zones
To touch on and to travel in Zone(s) 1 and/or 2, your myki must have:
- a minimum myki money balance of $0.01; or
- a myki pass valid for at least the zone in which you board and a myki money balance of at least $0.00.
If you have a valid myki pass and a negative myki money balance, your myki is not valid for travel until you have topped up the myki money balance to at least $0.00.
Travel in three or more zones
Before you travel in three zones or more, your myki must have:
- a myki pass valid for your entire journey; or
- a sufficient myki money balance to pay for the entire journey; or
- a myki pass for part of the journey and a sufficient myki money balance to pay for the rest of the journey.
You may only top up myki money on board V/Line coaches and trains if you did not have a reasonable opportunity to top up before travel. Cash sales only.
If you boarded a V/Line coach or train at a location with facilities for topping up, you are deemed to have had a reasonable opportunity to top up before travelling. For example, if you board a V/Line train at Southern Cross Station or at any other staffed station you must top up before boarding. In these circumstances, you may commit an offence if you do not top up before boarding.
