Touching on & off

Touch on when you get on.

You need to touch on at the beginning of your trip by holding your myki to the front of a myki reader. When you see a green light and hear a beep, you have touched on correctly.

When you hear:

  • One beep - touch on successful for a full fare myki
  • Two beeps - touch on successful for a concession, seniors or child myki
  • Three beeps - touch on unsucessful

Touch off when you get off.

Touching off is almost the same as touching on, but you do it at the end of each leg of your trip. With myki money, it is important to touch on and touch off every time so myki can calculate the best fare for you.

If you don’t touch off, you may be charged a default fare. You should also touch on and touch off when you are travelling with myki pass, so the system recognises that you have a valid ticket.

* Note: Please try again if you touch on or off was unsuccessful.  A further red light could mean that your myki has been declined, or that there are not enough funds on your myki. Check the message on the screen or call 13 6954 (13 myki) for more information. Your myki needs to be topped up or you must have a short term ticket in order to travel.

Touching on twice?

It is not possible to touch on twice. You can touch on and off at the same device, but a blocking period prevents you from touching on and then touching off again too quickly or by accident. If you change your mind and do not want to catch the train you were about to take, you can touch off within a certain period (up to 15 minutes) and you will not be charged a fare.

Note: There is no change of mind on trams or buses.
