Electronic Gates at Stations

At train stations with electronic gates, you will need to either touch on or touch off your myki at the gate barrier.

To touch on or touch off at a gate barrier, approach a gate that has a myki sticker on the front, as these gates can now validate both myki and Metcard.

There is an arrow pointing down towards the myki reader, which is located on the inside panel of the gate barrier. Electronic gates

Touch your myki to the centre of the myki reader, as shown.

Do not swipe the card. It must be held still to the myki reader.

The gates will then open, meaning your touch on or off has been successful.

myki reader on electronic gates

If travelling to a station that has electronic gates, please ensure that you touch on at the start of your journey. If you don’t touch on, you will not be able to touch off and exit the gates.

If the gates are already open, you will still need to touch on or off at the myki reader.

Unlike other myki readers, the current gates are not able to display touch on/off status, fare information or card balances. This function will come when dedicated myki gates are installed at stations.
